When we arrived on site, we noticed that locus 41 had been brought down to the elevation of a small portion of floor surface associated with the rectilinear hut that postdates EPOC4. Therefore, we will stop working in locus 41.

In locus 42, yesterday we removed all of the stones that comprised the southern wall of the rectilinear hut, so today we are working to remove all of the soil that held the stones of the wall. This soil is olive brown in color, claylike in texture and loose in comparison and contains only small quantities of material culture. We are excavating with hand picks and trowels, hand-sorting soil in the trench, then passing soil through 1 cm and 2mm gauge sieves. While working to bring Locus 42 down to the same elevation as the interior floor and exterior surfaces of the later rectilinear hut, we recovered a fragment of a fluted bucchero rim (find #4) and a worked piece of quartz (find #5)

As we approached the elevation of the preserved portion of the interior floor surface and exterior surface of the rectilinear hut that postdates EPOC4, soil became more compacted. Additionally,

we started to observe fragments of ceramic lying flat atop the more compacted deposit. This indicates that we have reached the interior and exterior surfaces of the rectilinear hut. Therefore, we will close Loci 41 and 42 and open Loci 43 and 44, which will be associated w/ the interior and exterior surfaces of the rectilinear hut respectively. Closing photos and elevations for Loci 41 + 42 were taken and closing plans were drawn.

We continued drawing closing plans of Loci 41 and 42 and opening plans for Loci 43 and 44. Once both sets of plans were drawn, we also took opening photos + elevations for Loci 43 + 44.

Locus 43 is the interior floor surface of the small rectilinear hut built atop EPOC4’s debris. Locus 44 is the exterior of this rectilinear hut and is preserved as far south as EPOC4/s foundation walls.

We began excavating Locus 43, using handpicks and trowels. On the floor surface of Locus 43, was an impasto rimsherd w/ a possible siglum (Find #6), which we photographed in situ then removed.
