Description Locus 5 constituted all the soil in and around the large stump in the east end of the trench (meters E169/S58.5-59.5). A the stump was quite large it extended down into different soil types, which were easiluy recognizable. Topsoil, the same as in locus 1 and 2 was present, the galestra-like soil of locus 3, then the medium brown layer below of locus 4. The stump did not extend into the next stratigraphic layer, locus 6, which is the pinkish soil of the Orientalizing scrape layer. The one special find from locus 5, the frieze plaque, was found in what corresponds in depth and soil type to the galestra-like soil of locus 3. Otherwise the locus was primarily taken up by large tap roots from the stump. Material yield was 1 3/4 cassetta of terracotta, 49 sherds of pottery, 4 pieces of bone, no metal, 1 special find: frieze plaque sherd.
