A.M.
Today was used to clean up the trench, i.e. trim baulk walls, remove stump, even out the trench floor. 5-7 cm.s were taken off the baulk walls on all sides (except east end with stump) to straighten the walls. ca. 1/2 cassetta of terracotta came out of the walls.
We took shallow pick passes in the floor of the trench on the west end, because there seems to be a soil change occurring on the east end. The soil looks red/pinkish very close up to the stump, but this soil is not apparant throughout the trench. I feel now that the stump must be removed to really understand the soil discoloration, therefore, we will focus on that.
We cleared a bit more of locus 4 soil in the west end but still have not reached the next stratigraphic layer. I will understand more after stump removal, but I suspect this layer is on a slope as it is not showing on the west end at all.
P.M.
The entire afternoon was dedicated to removing the stump. The stump area is locus 5 (opened on 7/14/03: see page 29 for measurements ) therefore all material yield will belong to this locus.
Locus 5 finds for 7/16:
3/4 cassetta of terracotta
21 sherds of pottery
No special finds
Ending elevations for 7/16 are as follows:
