Description | Locus 1 consists of a dark brown humus topsoil which is characterized by multiple small to medium tree and bush roots, pebble to cobble-sized stones (less than 2%), highly eroded tile fragments (less than 2%), and a few small pottery sherds. Locus 1 covers the entire trench. It varies in thickness with the greatest accumulation occuring along the western edge and the northern edge of the eastern extension of the trench. This lensing effect can be explained by a combination of the ground slope and preexisting trenches T28 North (2002) and T28 South, North Extension(2002). The ground slopes down from the west to the east along the northern extension of T28 North (2003) which causes Locus 1 soil near its east edge to be washed into T28 North (2002). The ground slopes down from the north to the south along the eastern extension of T28 North (2003) which causes Locus 1 soil near its south edge to be washed into T28 South (2002). Locus 1 is above Locus 2. The primary distinctions between Locus 1 and Locus 2 are the yellower, more compacted soil and higher concentrations of stone and tile inclusions in the latter. STRATIGRAPHIC CORRELATIONS WITH SURROUNDING TRENCHES: Locus 1 seems to correspond to the upper portion of the strata which Theodora B. Kopestonsky identifies as Loci 1, 4, and 8 in T28N (2001) (see TBK II T28 North 2001, pp. 129, 131, 135, 137), Kedar Tamhankar identifies as Loci 1 and 3 in T28N (2002) (see KT II T28 North 2002, pp. 151, 157, 169), and Joseph A. DiLuzio identifies as Loci 1 and 2 in T28S (2002) (see JAD II T28 South 2002, pp. 11, 13, 15, 17, 19, 21, 23, 25, 27, 29, 31, 33, 107). FINDS: A) orange ware - 1 sherd (undiagnostic); B) impasto ware - 17 sherds (undiagnostic); C) utilitarian ware - 1 rim sherd with black slip on the interior surface. |
