Daily Log

June 11, 2003

Using the nails sighted on Monday, 9 June, we measured out the western edge of the trench along 192 E (the same line which supposedly formed the western edge of T28 N in 2002 (KTII)).  We marked the North-South extent as 80-85 S.  We triangulated the rest of the dimensions to account for the error in measurements from previous years (JBB IV).  A trench datum point for use in determining fixed heights was established at <ADD COORDINATES> by setting an iron nail into a tree.  John Beeby then determined the height of this T28 N datum by measuring its position relative to the site datum using an optical transit.  The height of the trench datum point is 24.69 m above the site's zero point.  We then measured the starting heights around the edges of the trench at at the high-points of two prominent stones (see initial plan, p. 2).

We began excavating Locus 1 (topsoil) along the northern edge of the trench in swaths about 8 cm deep using a combination of light picking and trowelling.  We continued to excavate southward until the southern edge of the trench was reached.  We then continued eastward to the eastern edge.  Locus 1 consists of a dark brown humus soil with

many small to medium-sized tree roots and bush roots, pebble to cobble-sized stones (<2% by volume), highly eroded tile fragments (<2%), and a few pottery sherds.

At the eastern end of the Southern spur of the trench, we found a more compact, yellow, clay-like, clumpy layer.  This was traced westward, but so far has appeared only in small clumps elsewhere.

The boulder (R2) at the surface between 82 and 83 S seems now to be almost floating and probably can be removed tomorrow.  A new stone (R3) was uncovered just south of 84 S.  The northwest corner of the trench has revealed a very rocky consistency with several larger pieces of terra cotta embedded therein.

Pottery Count:  11 total sherds.  3 orange ware(?), 7 impasto, 1 utilitarian ware rim sherd with a black slip on the inside.
