Description | A hard, unusually rocky, red soil layer. This is very similar to Locus 4 in Trench 28. It is probably the under bedding for the stylobate of the middle colonnade as Trench 28, Locus 4 was the under bedding for the stylobate of the Eastern Colonnade. This layer was found primarily in the south of the trench underneath the agricultural deposition of Locus 3. Although there are no holes in the stylobate from which the bedding might have washed out, the uneven level of the stylobate indicates that there might have been a disturbance that allowed the bedding to wash out. The elevation of the layer (the top is 0.04 m below the top of the stylobate) supports the possibility that it is a bedding layer. It is also possible, given the similarity of the soils, that this is the same soil as Trench 28, Locus 4 bedding from the eastern stylobate. The interpretation of this layer as present in Trenches 14 and 20 was as a floor bedding and it is possible that Locus 4 served this purpose as well. There were some finds in this layer, including one metal nail, a shell and small amounts of pottery and bone. |
