Description Locus 1 is a medium brown humus layer full of tangled roots and other organic material. Small to medium-sized rocks were encountered frequently, as well as a layer of whitish-yellow root rot which affected the locus soil color. Several large tree stumps are present in trench, not to be removed until later. Below humus, we found brown clayish soil mottled with some yellow-brown clay inclusions which came up in large pieces. Yellow-brown soil was especially prevalent in the northern section of the trench. Perhaps due to downward slope of trench area moving south to north, we found the aforementioned clay soil shallower in the northern end of trench. Found small amounts of extremely worn terracotta in the topsoil of locus 1, present perhaps due to erosion and washout. Found one fragment of rusted iron, probably modern.
