Methodology

Methodology

CA-56 was laid out using a North/South baseline extending from the origin point of the grid system and an East/West baseline set 17 m north of the origin. A nail was placed in a tree on the southwestern edge of the trench to serve as a datum point for elevations. The absolute elevation (A.E.) of this datum point was 28.795 m.

The dirt dump for CA-56 is located approximately 20 m north of the Archaic well. The terracotta dump is approximately 10 m south of the Archaic well

Collected materials will be separated according to locus, baulk trim, or stump trim.

Terracotta will be collected in a bowl measuring approximately 29.5 cm in diameter and 8.5 cm in depth; when smaller amounts of terracotta are recovered, individual pieces will be counted and then discarded. For larger recoveries only the number of bowls will be recorded.

Pottery and bone will be collected in separate latte boxes measuring approximately 23 x 9 x 6 cm; this material will then be brought down from the hill to be cleaned, sorted, and counted. If larger amounts of pottery or bone are recovered, only the number of latte boxes filled will be recorded; smaller amounts will be counted at the end of the day.

Any metal or glass recovered will be made a find. These items will be kept separate and their coordinates and elevations will be recorded.
