Description | Three joining and two associated fragments of a partly vitrified terracotta pan tile which preserves its full length, a notched flange, finger impressions, and elements of slip. Fragment A preserves the notch in the flange, max. pres. length of 0.05996 and 0.01717m narrower in width than the rest of the flange. Near its finished edge perpendicular to the flange, Fragment A preserves two finger impressions, the larger of which is 0.01840m from the finished edge and has a width of 0.01595. Fragment B is warped by vitrification to an extent that its upper pan face has become convex and the lower pan face has become concave. Fragment C is also warped, cracked, and broken by vitrification away from its original horizontal positioning to the extent that one of the three pieces from which it was consolidated cannot be glued to the others. This element of Fragment C also preserves in its break edge an inclusion of pottery, possibly impasto in fabric, measuring 0.03212m in length and 0.00976m in thickness. Fragments A, B, and C preserve the full length of the tile, including its notched flange which shows evidence of mold marks in several parallel ridges running its length. Fragments D and E preserve only the two pan faces, having all broken edges. The interior of the pan including the interior of the flange as represented across all fragments preserves elements of a reddish slip. |
