Description |
Locus 9 consisted of a compacted reddish deposit. The soil of Locus 9 was exceptionally plaster-rich and contained high quantities of pottery, specifically coarseware and crucibles, slag, and vitrified terracotta. Many of the plaster fragments were large and preserved reed impressions and a flat or curved surface; the flat surfaces likely were the outer faces of a plastered, wattle and daub wall, while curved surfaces likely resulted from wattle and daub post impressions. Small to medium-sized rocks were scattered throughout the locus as well. Locus 9 was situated to the north of the T66 2016 section through the floor of EPOC4. Locus 9 also was positioned above Locus 10, which had a rock packing at its bottom. As we excavated the locus, we found that Locus 9 was bordered by bedrock to the north and in places, overlay this bedrock. Based on the compaction of the deposit, the high quantities of plaster with reed impressions, and the locus’ stratigraphic positioning over Locus 10 with its rock packing, we tentatively hypothesize that Locus 9 is the remains of a collapsed wattle and daub wall that was deposited in a depression created by a bedrock outcropping. Small stones were scattered in the deposit, which was then compacted when the beaten earth floor of EPOC4 (Locus 8) was laid over the deposit. Therefore, Locus 9 both may represent the collapse of a structure predating EPOC4 and a leveling effort to aid in the construction of EPOC4. |
