Description | A fragment of a coarseware handle preserving an impression which may be a siglum. The handle curves gently in profile, having a convex and concave finished face. The concave finished face is somewhat chipped. The convex face is finished with an impression stretching the length of the preserved portion. The impression on the whole takes an "S" shape within the portion of the handle which is preserved. At one lateral break edge (the max. pres. width), the impression starts 0.01056m from the transverse break edge. It first curves away from that break edge for about 0.02016m before turning back towards the break edge into which it disappears after about 0.02304m. The impression then turns back away from the transverse break edge before it disappears into the opposite lateral break edge. The impression is an approximate width of 0.00934m. It appears likely to have been made by a finger rather than another tool. The impression may be purely decorative or may be a siglum (or some overlap therein). |
