Trench
  • Tesoro 91
  • Tesoro 93
  • Tesoro 92
Description
  • Locus 2 covers the same area of the trench as Locus 1. The soil of this locus is lighter in color than Locus 1. It appears to be olive brown in color. There are less organics and stones in this locus verses Locus 1.

  • Locus 2 is the locus directly below Locus 1 in the original trench. The depth of Locus 2 is approximately 35-40 centimeters and slopes slightly downward from north to south. Locus 2 is a light yellowish brown soil, heavily compacted, and has a clay-like texture. Although Locus 2 contains less organic materials than Locus 1, there are still small to large roots present that extend from the large tree on the western baulk wall and small to medium sized rocks that measure between 10-35 centimeters in width. Locus 2 is a deposition and is considered to be non-contextual. There was one catalogued find from Locus 2, a seated statue skirt fragment with the ID# 20180005. Locus 2 is synonymous with Locus 2 of nearby trenches T-91 and T-92, located directly to the north of T-93.

  • Locus 2 is a clay-like soil with a dense, clumpier feel. There are still root inclusions throughout the trench with fewer rocks. Locus 2 is a layer of topsoil, which lies just below Locus 1 and covers the same area of the trench as Locus 1. Due to the slope of the locus and the trench, the depth of this stratum ranged from 0-25cm, mostly in the Northeastern corner. Most of the architectural terracotta derived from this trench comes from the northern region, presumably a product of the root systems within these regions. We noticed a higher concentration of bone and pottery in this locus, however, the overall quantity was not large. Two pieces of metal and a piece of slag were recovered, however, the locus is not contextual.  This locus in analogous of Locus 2 in T-91. No cataloged finds were recovered from Locus 2. A 40 liter sample of soil was captured on July 10 for archaeobotanical analysis.
