Description | A full length of lead pipe some 10.1 m long and 9 cm in diameter, well-preserved in most areas but corroded in some places, running e-w between and through the two engaged columns of the exedra. It would seem from initial exploration that the pipe constitutes a late feature and is cut through the sides of the columns, which were then plastered. The pipe was laid in segments which were then crimped or soldered together; some joins are still visible. This pipe is most certainly the same that was found in fragments running in front of the East-West Retaining Wall recovered in 1996 and 1997. Fragments coming off the decaying sections of the pipe were preserved and sampled as Metal Container 36. |
