Phase X
Description This is an ash lens found at the lower level of Locus 2, extending about 1.0 m east from the east face of the Middle Pier Wall (Locus 11). The ash had a fine texture with a powdery feel and a generally loose consistency, although with some compaction from the overburden of Locus 2. It had a Munsell Color range between 7.5YR 5/1 (Gray) and 2.5/1 (Black). The deposit appears to result from dumping into the space after the collapse events, indicated in part by vertical intrusions of the ash down between the architectural elements of Locus 9. Surrounding architectural elements, both those in situ and those collapsed, were heavily stained through their contact with the ash. There were a small number of inclusions in this deposit, with the largest percentage represented by pottery—including a significant number of ceramic hypocaust and pipe fragments.
Location West side of Trench 97, between 11th and 16th arch springers toward the north.
