Description
  • Light reddish brown (5YR 6/4), late, fill layer. Pottery and bone recovered from this layer, including one green, possibly Islamic, pottery base (Bag P96-47).
  • Pertinent information on the east stylobate wall can be found in the Trench 25 report, submitted by L. Bestock and J. Gimon. The wall is in Trench 25, Locus 3. The stylobate wall formed the west edge of the trench. It is composed of roughly-hewn, limestone blocks and is reasonably-well constructed. Approximately 1.16 m from the top of the wall, an inset gap, roughly 0.16 m in height and extending the excavated length of the wall, is found. It is hypothesized that this gap runs the entire length of the stylobate wall, from the Exedra to the Propylaeum. The space is similar to the gaps running around the Qasr al Bint and was hypothetically used for wooden beams that provided earthquake protection for the stylobate wall by absorbing energy from potential earthquakes. Other than this feature, there are no distinguishing features on the stylobate wall.
