Description | Built on rubble fill, these walls are one course with two rows of stones. These two walls consist of broken, uneven, crudely hewn sandstone and limestone cobbles and boulders that are dry-laid. They are generally one course in height but are sometimes two. The intention of the early builders was to build up the subsidence in the bedrock and to create a level surface. We have placed these loci together because they are on the same alignment. While excavation was taking place it was reasoned that these were two separate walls, but in fact it is clear that are one and the Cistern-Reservoir was constructed at roughly their midpoint. The evidence suggests that the junction of these two walls can be found under the Cistern-Reservoir walls. |
