Descriptive Attribute Value(s)
Description This construction entirely blocks the entrance to the Vault Locus 14, and is built from a combination of hewn sandstone ashlars and unhewn fieldstones, which were laid in a wet-mortar technique using snecking stones. There are two irregular courses visible above the level of the West Cryptoporticus East floor (Locus 25), but there are indications that the blockage extends down lower beneath the floor pavers. The upper course of the construction clearly indicates that the stones were shaped to fit the curvature of the vault entrance. This fact, combined with the indications that the blockage extends lower than the current floor level, led to this locus being assigned to the secondary construction period of Stage 3. The blockage remains in situ.
