Description | Locus 1 extended over the entirety of the original trench area and sloped downward from north to south. The locus consisted of a dark brown, grass root filled soil that also contained many small rocks. Soil contained relatively little material and the materials that were recovered from this locus were mostly abraded, indicating that materials may have eroded into this stratum or be debris associated with the dirt road that runs just to the south of the trench. The materials recovered from this locus were chronologically mixed, with ancient artifacts, such as bucchero sherds, found together with modern nails, indicating that it is not a contextualized, stratified deposit. In sum, Locus 1 is topsoil. There are no notable architectural or geological features associated with the locus. Locus 1 is equivalent to Locus 5 in the northern and western extension of the trench; both are topsoil. |
