Work began by closing Locus 1 , the hard baked, dark brown topsoil, and the opening of Locus 2 , the lighter yellowish brown, claylike soil. Closing photos and elevations for Locus 1 /opening photos and elevations for Locus 2 were taken. Locus 1 was officially closed and Locus 2 opened.
Closing elevations Locus 1/Opening elevations Locus 2:

NE corner: 27.21m A.E.

SE corner: 27.02m A.E.
-
SW corner: 26.79m A.E.
Work began with a pick pass of Locus 2 , starting in the northern meters of the trench and moving south. Soil is medium yellowish brown in color and claylike in texture, with some small-to-medium sized rocks located toward the central meters of the trench. As were are now through top soil, all buckets will be hand-sorted directly in the trench and 1 in 3 buckets will be dry sieved. Soil contains noticeably more tile than the previous locus. During this pick pass, in the southern meters of the trench, 3 pieces of slag were found (Finds #1, 2, 3). Also, the southern half of the trench, close to the dirt road,
is characterized by densely packed rocks.
A second pick pass was made of the trench, once again beginning in the north and moving south. Soil in this pick pass continues to be medium yellowish brown in color and claylike in texture, with many small but loosely packed rocks near the center of the trench and a dense, hard packing of stones in the SW corner, near the dirt road. Soil was hand-sorted directly into buckets in the trench and then 1 in 3 buckets was dry sieved. A fair amount of tile was found, as well as two more fragments of slag (Finds #4, 5), and so from now on, slag from Locus 2 will be bulk found, unless it is exceptionally sized. During this pick pass, a fragment of terracotta with black coating (Find #6) was recovered.

Work continued in the afternoon with a pick pass of the entire trench, beginning in the north and working south. Soil throughout the trench was rocky, with many small rocks, but they are more densely packed in the SW corner of the trench, closest to the road, while there are more loosely packed rocks in the northern half of the trench, while in the SE quarter, there seem to be fewer rocks that are loosely spaced. Soil in the northern half of the trench and in the SW corner is a medium yellowish brown in color and claylike in texture, while the soil in the SE corner feels slightly looser and is a bit redder in color. Soil continues to be hand-sorted directly into buckets in the trench, with 1 in 3 buckets dry sieved. A fairly high quantity of tile and ceramic, as well as iron slag, was found, as well as a slightly curving bronze sheet fragment (Find #7) and an oddly shaped triangular rock (Find #8).
