Visualizing Votive Practice: Exploring Limestone and Terracotta Sculpture from Athienou-Malloura through 3D Models
This project publishes the 3D models and associated data from the figural votive sculpture dedicated at the rural sanctuary at Athienou-Malloura, Cyprus.
This collaborative digital project publishes a selection of high-resolution 3D models of the figural votive dedications from the rural sanctuary at Athienou-Malloura in Cyprus, under investigation by Davidson College’s Athienou Archaeological Project (AAP) since 1990. This large and wealthy Iron Age sanctuary is among the most important on the island, and one of the few to be excavated scientifically. The finds from this site contribute to our understanding of Cypriot religious practice in the Cypro-Geometric through Roman periods. This open-access publication of 3D models of limestone and terracotta statuary includes photorealistic 3D models (produced by structured light scanning), their associated metadata, as well as formal and contextual data. This online publication supplements the simultaneous publication, Visualizing Votive Practice: Exploring Limestone and Terracotta Sculpture from Athienou-Malloura through 3D Models (ASOR and The Digital Press at University of North Dakota), which includes chapters on methods and technology, AAP and the Malloura sanctuary, the significance of limestone and terracotta dedications on Cyprus, and an interactive artifact catalogue using 3D PDF. Through this multi-pronged approach to publishing 3D data, AAP builds upon the rich tradition of archaeological catalogues by adding 3D and linked open data to this time-honored format.

Open Context editors work with data contributors to annotate datasets to shared vocabularies, ontologies, and other standards using 'Linked Open Data' (LOD) methods.
The annotations presented above approximate some of the meaning in this contributed data record to concepts defined in shared standards. These annotations are provided to help make datasets easier to understand and use with other datasets.
