Forthcoming Project Overview

The Madaba Plains Project-`Umayri (MPPU) dataset is a comprehensive record of material excavated and recorded during the project's 32-year history -- 1984-2016. Using a modified, modernized, and computerized version of the Wheeler-Kenyon excavation and recording methods, MPP-U developed computerized forms, created for digital databases, ultimately transitioning to full digital data harvesting, recording, storage, and dissemination. In addition to traditional excavation practices, analyses, and reporting, MPP-U expanded its technological reach to include GPS, GIS, LiDAR, Gigapan 3D scanning, and photogrammetry using land-based and drone-mounted photographic equipment. Analytic processes involved artifacts (ceramic, metal, bone, stone, and glass, with special attention to seal impressions and inscriptions, jewelry, cosmetic implements, and figurines) and paleozoological and paleobotanical remains. Regular publication outlets include seasonal reports for the Annual of the Department of Antiquities of Jordan and seasonal (with a total number of 15 volumes) and final excavation volumes (five in all).
