A.M.

Work started in the new section of CA42 in the morning.  5-10 cm topsoil cut was made in meters N10-12/W11-13.  Topsoil is almost black in color, containing numerous plant roots, few small rocks and a lot of organic decaying matter.  There is a large bedrock outcropping in meters N12-13/W11-13 with numerous tree stumps around it.  A lot of organic debree is accumulated around the stumps.

At a depth of 5 cm below surface level, the soil becomes more clayey and changes color to olive brown.  Top soil is designated Locus 1.

The datum point was established 20 cm above surface at the northwest corner of meter N6/W13.  This datum point will be used for the entire CA42 area.  All

measurements of depth will be taken for the datum point and recorded as such (b.d. = below datum).  Elevation measurements of all meter points around the perimeter of the new section of CA42 trench were taken from the datum point ( ).

The topsoil cut yielded ~65 extremely worn tile fragments (from 1 to 10 cm).  6 small fragments of creamware and 6 orangeware pieces were found.

It was decided to wait until the afternoon to start work in the well area because of wet soil condition in excavated parts of CA42.

P.M.

Continued topsoil cut in N13-14/W11-13.  Rocks and stumps in the middle of the trench were defined.  Baulks were trimmed.  A total of 6 orangeware fragments and 30 tile pieces were recovered in the afternoon.  Both tile and pottery were extremely worn.

The work was started in the well area as well.  Higher soil level (Locus 20) in meters N3-5/W15 was taken down to the lowest excavated level of the trench west of the well.  A trench approximately 2x2 m was created.  The soil was sterile (galestra) throughout with few rocks included.  Baulk trim was started.
