We began working in the burnt deposit of Locus 10, using trowels to excavate. The soil is loose and dark grayish-brown in color; this color is caused by the multiple fragments of charcoal in the soil. The soil of Locus 10 slopes downward from an outcropping of bedrock in the northernmost meters of the section. There are numerous small rocks pressed against the bedrock and integrated in the burnt deposit. Within these small rocks, we found high quantities of slag and materials associated with metalworking. In this area, we recovered a piece of tile with adhered vitrified material (Find #191), and two large fragments of slag, one of which preserves a curved surface (Finds #193, 200). Materials associated with metalworking are not only confined to the northernmost meters of the trench, but have been found throughout the locus. We have found three crucible fragments (Finds #190, 194, 199) and an iron fragment (Find #196), along with high quantities of slag. We also have found high quantities of plaster and moderate amounts of pottery, bone, and vitrified terracotta. We have begun to recover large fragments of diagnostic bone, including a tooth (Find #192), a large vertebra fragment, likely from a cow (Find #189), a large joint (Find #198), and two unidentified diagnostic bones (Finds #195, 197). We also have found a rim and neck sherd of a fineware vessel painted red (Find #201) and a sling stone (Find #202).
We are hand sorting soil in the trench then screening soil through 1 cm and 2 mm gauge sives. We also are revealing more medium-sized rocks in the southernmost area of the section, beneath where the flat rocks were found yesterday. These small stones are clustered in the SW corner of the section and currently do not seem to extend eastward. We will leave the rocks in situ, at least for now, until we can determine whether or not they are a feature. While working amidst these rocks, we found a jaw with an attached molar (Find #203). As we leveled the area around the stones, we found two more crucible fragments (Finds #204, 206), a piece of tile with adhered vitrified material (Find #207), a large fragment of slag (Find #205), a sherd of incised pottery (Find #208), a fragment of iron (Find #209), and a piece of antler (Find #210).

We continued excavating the burnt deposit of Locus 10, moving from S to N. We have brought the trench roughly down to the elevation of the medium-sized stones in the southern half of the section. The stones seem to be delineated on their eastern side and extend westward into the section wall. As we were working in the southern part of the locus, leveling the trench floor, we found a curved piece of slag (Find #211) and a crucible fragment (Find #212).
Once the boundaries of the stone cluster were established roughly, we began to push to the N. Here, we began to encounter a new, olive brown, claylike soil. We will work to expose this new deposit as much as possible, although there is still the burnt deposit of Locus 10 appearing in the northernmost area of the trench, above bedrock. As we were pushing north, we found another crucible fragment (Find #213). We also found two more crucible fragments (Finds #214, 215) and a tooth.
As we were working in the northern meters of the section, we began to uncover medium-sized rocks similar to those found in the southern part of the trench. In fact, these new stones seem to form a continuous line with those exposed in the south of the section. These stones may even by lying in the new, olive-brown clay deposit that began to appear this afternoon. We will spend the rest of the day defining these stones. When we were working in the northern part of the section, we found two more crucible fragments (Finds #216, 218) and recovered an additional crucible fragment from the sieve (Find #217).
While defining rocks in the NE corner of the trench, we recovered three additional crucible fragments (Finds #220, 221, 222).
Once the rocks were adequately defined, we could see that the cluster of stones first exposed in the southern part of the section continue to the north, where they are positioned to the east of the bedrock outcropping. These stones may overlie the olive-brown claylike deposit that began to appear. At this point, there is still some of the burnt deposit of Locus 10 present between the stones, but we will halt excavations now, due to time constraints and to preserve this fragile arrangement of stones. Closing elevations for Locus 10 were taken. Closing photos will be taken at a later date, when the light is better.
