Cleared path for wheelbarrow. The same dirt dump used last year will be utilized this year. The tile dump will be the old T 26 tile dump at the western end of the workshop. Began trench work by cleaning out dead leaves, brush and debris. Straightened out baulk and removed wash out. Took depth measurements which were as follows: SE 53 cm bd.; SW 56 cm bd.; NW 47 cm bd.; NE 52 cm bd.; MID 52 cm bd. Insofar as Locus 3 had been the last locus designated in 1997, it was decided that Locus 4 would be the beginning locus in 1998. Soil was Munselled at 2.5 Y 4/4. Began first cut in meters E 149-50 S 58. Picked entire trench down 3 cm.
Began 2nd cut down. Soil has not changed colour or texture and remains sandy, staly and mostly sterile.
