Daily Log

June 17, 2003

During the morning we continued to lower Locus 2 .  From the difficult balks of T28 N (2002), we have inferred an expected soil color change approximately 5 to 8 cm below today's opening levels.  The tree stump located at approximately 82 S seems as if it is almost floating.  We therefore cleared dirt from its base and set out to articulate its roots.  Just after lunch, it became possible and helpful to remove the stump.  There is some floriturbation beneath where the stump was, due to three large roots projecting downward from the stump.

The afternoon was occupied by continuing work on Locus 2 across the trench.  Because of a persistent threat of rain, we worked especially cleanly, sweeping more frequently than usual.

At the close of day, we were coming down on a slightly lighter, brownish soil in patches throughout the trench.  These brownish patches seem to correspond to a slight decrease in the concentration of roots.  The patches will be further exposed tomorrow.

Pottery Count:  30 total sherds.  24 undiagnostic impasto, 1 impasto everted rim fragment (= Find #1 ; found out of context), 3 orange ware sherds,

2 bucchero sherds including 1 piece of a footed base stem.

Also found were 7 pieces of unworked bone, 2 fragments of modern (at least significantly post-Etruscan) terra cotta, and 1 piece of vitrified ceramic, and a small metal bead (= Find #2 ).
