T6E (2)

The second layer was taken down from the 1 meter strip along the trench's east edge (laid out Saturday 26 July) (on grid, B-6 -- M-6).  This strip yielded

  1. Sima  F-6 one box of tile dumped 1/2 box nice pottery fragments plus bone

Next, the south edge of the trench was evened ( ).  The lower left hand corner of a (1) procession frieze plaque was discovered in the tile box.  Another box of tile was dumped, more pottery and bone found.  (2) A piece of cornice (M-4), (4 and 5) 2 pieces of procession frieze (M-4) and a (6) sima fragment (J-6) were found.  A (7) cornice fragment came from M-5.

Excavation was then undertaken to bring T6E (2) into the same orientation as T6E (1), and the grid was adjusted accordingly. the new trench and grid appear in black ink the old trench in blue ink and the old grid in pencil.  Finds previous to yesterday are numbered according to old grid.

T6E (1)

The cut J-M 15-21 was taken down to the level of the walls and column foundatins excavated in T6D and T6E.  Patches of bedrock appeared and a line of stones ca 2-15 M long and 25 cm wide W of the western most column foundation leaving a gap of ca 0.50 m.  the number of tiles increased in this cut and 6 boxes were dumped.  One piece of horserace frieze was found and a number of curved pieces with an uneven inside and remains of a round hole (statue fragment?).

A new cut was made, 8 m long and 4 m wide, grid J-M 7-14.  Topsoil and the first layer were taken off, which produced only 2 boxes of tiles.
