Munsell: Brown soil- 7.5YR 4/4 Brown

Red/purple soil- 5YR 4/4 Reddish Brown

Description:

Locus 26 is a layer of heavily carbon-included dark brown soil. The layer is 1.26 m wide and extends from the northern edge of the OC2/Workshop floor (Locus 2) for 1.10m. The plaster collapse layer (Locus 25) abuts and covers Locus 26 in a line that is parallel to the OC2/Workshop floor. Locus 26 is 0.80 m long on the western extent between Locus 2 and Locus 25 and 0.97 m long between Locus 2 and Locus 24 in the eastern extent. Locus 26 was excavated in 2022 as Locus 13. In the 2023 season, the northern 0.20 meters were excavated as a section in order to lift the carbon deposit of Locus 30.

The soil is a clay and soil mixture of loose compaction. The layer contains frequent inclusions of carbon, ceramics, a small amount of vitrified terracotta fragments and bones. Frequent inclusions of small red and brown chert added to the dark color of the layer. During excavation, a rocchetto fragment was excavated (PC20230027).

The color, compaction, and composition of Locus 26 is similar to that of Locus 28 and Locus 35. The layer may have functioned as a leveling course for the construction of the OC2/Workshop floor.
