Work continued clearing backfill and washout from the area along the north baulk in meters IJ/87-90. Very little tile, plaster or ceramic was removed. In the balk a clear plaster stratum was visible at 40-50cm from the surface. [It might be noted that this area was cleared with a front end loader and that a modern plaster dump is over I/90-91. Thus all surface levels are artificial.] This plaster layer included large pieces of terracotta including a large fragment of covertile preserving a finished width. It was sticking out of the balk within the plaster layer in an upside down position with the interior filled with plaster. Little of the material from this stratum appeared burned. Below this appeared a stratum including large rock and burned material. These rocks were defined somewhat and swept down. At this stage it is not at all clear what they are.
More work was done clearing in Q/192-93 around a large stump. At about 20cm. From the
surface plaster began to show up in greater concentration. The "floor" of the cut was cleaned with hammer and mestilina. Very littkle tile or plaster fragments came from here above this level howeve. Three large rocks were left until further cleaning could be done.
P.M.
In the afternoon the stump in Q/92-93 was cleaned down further and removed.
