The burnt bone (Special find number 1) came from the area beneath the large sloping rock in the east, in the vicinity of yesterday's second in situ vessel. It was around this location that several other (non-burned) pieces of bone were discovered yesterday as well.

Two more pick passes were conducted in Locus 5 using the big pick. During the second pick pass, fragments of an impasto vessel with a full base were visible. More fragments were recovered, including a rim fragments and so it was decided to make this Special Find number 6. More pieces belonging to this vessel were also found in the bulk pottery box.

The area around the location of the impasto vessel was lowered using hand picks and trowels, so as to not damage any other part, should they be present/

It is now too difficult to use the big pick in this locus due to its elevation, thus hand picks will be used to continue to lower the surface. The majority of the soil is still light brown, claylike and damp, however in both the eastern and western 30cm lighter brown soil with a coarser, more crumbly texture is beginning to emerge.

PM

Hand pocks were used to lower the surface of Locus 5 . Hand picks and trowels are also being used to define baulk walls in the north and to the east in locus 4 .

(Photos taken)

The third in situ vessel discovered was several partial pieces of a base, as well as a possible rim fragment. Photos were taken while the vessel was in the ground and points taken. The shape and colour are similar to another partial vessel discovered at the close of last season (FGT-III, pg. 164, 30 th July, Special Find number 1 \x91Concentration of Pottery') and so any other fragments which may be discovered will be determined a special find, as will any pieces of cream ware pottery.

There is a distinct difference in the colour of the soil between locus 4 and locus 5 (which is now at about the same elevation as locus 4 ). Locus 4 is comprised of soil ranging from which h to light brown decomposing rock, whereas locus 5 is still light brown though claylike in texture. Thus, hand picks and trowels will be used to scrap back from the boundary between these two loci (in the south of T-58) to determine the point at which this change in color and texture occurs.

The southern and eastern baulk walls in locus 5 were trimmed, as well as the northern and eastern baulks in Locus 4 .
