Daily Log
Tuesday, June 6 Afternoon
Work began today in Rectangle 9, removing portions of the earth in Grids G-I 5. This is the area above the west wall of the Lower Building immediately to the south of the cut into E-F 5 taken in 1975 to uncover this wall (see BP-MF, Bk. 1, p.62 drawing and p.140 ). Within this cut of 25-30cm, the same charcoal burning within a stratum of red gravel was found, matching that reported in 1975. Again, the majority of finds came from the loose, dark brown earth below (see BP-MF, Bk. I pp.60 and 138 for drawing , pp. 142-143 for explanation of layers ).
Very few finds were found in these grids. Fine pottery was extremely scarce with no bucchero fragments and only a half dozen pieces of "red ware." Tile fragments numbered around 10. In contrast, metal was slightly more abundant, including numerous tiny fragments of bronze sheeting, a copper ingot, and two tiny balls of bronze, perhaps the heads of pins (at present, they were left embedded in the clump of soil until restoration and preservation).
I-5 was particularly barren.
