July 9 Friday A.M. only

The second layer of the stone feature was drawn and photgraphed; the architect laid out a quadrant (N.B. stake in east wall is 1.80m N of corner of trench) on N-S E-W axes to provide for excavation around exterior contour of feature: the North-East quadrant was begun in this manner - after one quadrant is taken down about a meter, the center "hole" in the feature will be excavated.  A small portion of the quadrant was taken down, and it was observed that a very small area around the stones was filled with a little brown earth finer than the decayed brown shale of the galestra surrounding the feature - indicating that the stones were set into the sides of a dug pit.  One sherd, from an impasto pithos ( orange exterior, black paster) was found about 25 cm below the level of top of the top layer of stones, in the brown earth against the stone sides of the feature.
