The ninth cut down was completed, but did not go below the layer of black soil (C)- in the tenth cut down, black soil remained around a complex of stones in grid J-13 and part of 14, while on the other side of this (i.e. in grid K-13) the soil changed to a yellow-brown (slightly darker than the upper, second layer of yellowish soil in the trench). The cut has yet to be continued into J and K 14+-17.
(Because of the slope of the underlying terrain, the C level was lower in grids J-K 17, so the ninth cut down included a cleaning up of the yellowish layer (B) before excavation of C- 2 strawberry boxes of sherds and one small bag of bones were sent down- refer to p. 21 .) Also 1 terracotta fragment with rough, parallel, flat-topped ridges from J-16B.
