Daily Log

Thursday, 30 July

The black soil layer was removed in all parts of the trench but the extreme south-east corner, where it appeared to slope down even more steeply than the underlying terrain- also, this soil in J-17 seemed slightly blacker than layer C in the rest of the trench, and somewhat sooty.  Below the black (C) soil in J-13 was an area of rocks set in a rough formation slightly larger than a semi-circle: black earth filled in among these, and contained a few artifacts- a posible cut-out thick acroterion fragment, and a presumed tile left in place under one of the large, western-most rocks in the formation.  Elsewhere, the black soil layer (C) was removed to expose a layer of yellowish-brown soil much darker than B, the layer above the black soil, and this contained a few artifacts, including a sherd with 'slag\' encrustation.  Below this D- yellowish-brown layer is galestra in all parts of the trench except the north- and south-east corners-

these have not yet been taken down to galestra, but further examination of these features will probably call for an eastern extension of the entire trench.

Finds:

also sent down from the \'D\' - yellowish brown- layer were a small amount of sherds, and a small bag of bones, including
