Continued with work from Friday. The wide somewhat linear feature of stones in the tree base defined in order to find the western extent of it. The western extent was found Friday towards the north, but that needs to be followed and further defined towards the southern baulk wall. Simultaneously, definition continued in the central area of the trench northward from the area of packed, mottled soil to explore its extent. In both areas, soil removed is consistent with Locus 2 , sorted and cleaned from the trench. Terra cotta, pottery, bone, and vitrified terra cotta being found. Work in the central area shifted: we are now focusing on following the wide linear rock feature north through the trench towards (and into) CA 73. Soil remains consistent with Locus 2 , terra cotta, pottery, bone, slag, and vitrified terra cotta being found. The rock feature is clearest in the southern part of the trench. Its width is about 70cm in total, with each rock 15-40cm in length. During definition, carbon present in the northern section. Additionally, some small flecks of bronze found in the soil. While scraping to the east of the robust rock feature, uncovered a possible copper
bead.

Locus 2
During definition of the robust rock feature, found an unusual piece of terra cotta.

Locus 2
More small flecks of bronze found while defining the feature. There is also carbon present in the Locus 2 soil around the rocks in the feature.
Also during definition, discovered a piece of incised pottery.

Locus 2
Continued to move north along the wide rock feature to reveal more of it and clearly define and delineate. Pottery, bone, terra cotta, slag, and vitrified terra cotta continue to be present. Carbon also still present in the Locus 2 soil surrounding the rocks. Large fragments of terra cotta included and present in the somewhat linear, robust feature, including roofing tiles and possible pithoi fragments.
PM
Work continued defining the robust rock feature north towards CA 73. Soil consistent with Locus 2 , sorted and cleaned from the trench. Finding terra cotta, pottery, bone, slag, and vitrified terra cotta. One fragment of iron found, with modern breaks.
Find 4: Iron Fragments
26.89m A.E.

Locus 2
The rock feature has been defined to its full extent and up to the depth of the packed earth possible surface. In preparation for photographs of the entire CA area, CA 72 scraped and swept and roots clipped.
Daily Totals:
Locus 2:
Terra cotta: 3/4 bowl
Pottery: 181 fragments
Bone: 62 fragments
Slag: 8 fragments
Vitrified terra cotta: 12 fragments
