Trench 1E

A trench measuring 4 x 11m was dug to the W of trenches 1 and 1D and called trench 1E. The wall continues.

Stratum A was as usual, however just below the surface some differences were noticed. In the N area some stones became visible which were some what in line with theose in 1D. Between these stones and the N wall of the trench Stratum F appeared below Stratum A as had happened in the NW corner of 1D; many stones in this stratum.

In this trench within Stratum B and just beside the N side of the wall and almost jetting into the W side of the trench a large piece of a pot or statue was uncovered. It was almost 30cm from the surface. In this same corner as the North Tiles were cleaned, other unusual pieces of terracotta were found. Some have been left in the ground and will be uncovered when trench 1G reaches that level. All these heavy pieces seem to be clustered together in one area.

Stratum B over the South Tiles and the South Tile Stratum proved rich in trench 1E. Not only for the hand uncovered, but also because of the large quantity of decorated bucchero pottery found  . Also, about 5 bronze nails and a bronze sheet were uncoverd in this area.

Stratum D and fairly large brick pieces covered more of the southern part of the trench than before, and here tiles were scarce and scattered, but some were within Stratum D and some were over-lying. The few tiles forund near the wall were not over the wall, but were definitely lying at a level higher than the wall.

As digging continued, the barrier of rocks in the N part of the trench were seen  to form the upper part of a fallen wall which had fallen to the N and which was overlain by Stratum F. In this Stratum there was no North Tile Bbed or Stratum E found as the darker earth continued down to a depth of 1.20-1.25m. When fallen rocks covered the whole bottom. The pottery became some what less and less as the stratum went down; several pieces of Greek Pottery, one perhaps Corinthian, were found; bones were numerous; and a

few iron nails were found, also bronze bits.

Seen only in the W profile between the rock barrier and the N end of the trench is a yellow stratum similar to Stratum C. It begins at about a depth of 60cm and continues down over the fallen rocks. It is not seen in the N profile at all. Tiles, pottery, etc. were present as in Stratum F.

To a depth of almost 1.50m the rocks in the bottom were removed until very large rocks appeared along with natural rock im some of the area. These large rocks were left in. Stratum F does overlay these rocks; however, beneath the so-called fallen wall itself, after cleaning down, several strata were apparent and seem to represent a fill area as found in the test trenches. This fill is not seen on any of the profiles and is only under the wall.

In this same stratum several bricks (p. 78) were uncovered at depths of 1.40 - 1.50m. Somewhat higher up in the stratum 3 pieces of frieze were found - 3 banquet scene and 1 horserace. (p. 97)
