Test Trench 1

A trench 1 1/2 x 3m was dug below the East Stratum; the trench lies in the S past of trenches 1 and 1A ans is perpendicular to the wall so that the face and foundation of the wall could be exposed.

Below the rather thick E Stratum were found numerous levels indicating a fill of some sort; these strada differed in color, texture, and width, but all seemed to contain some sherds and bones.

In the S part of this trench bedrock was hit and in the N virgin soil was struck.  A sizeable foundation for the rubble wall was exposed.

Since the strada changed so quickly and were at times so thin, actual strada were not labeled. Thus Stratum A is simply that earth from the top soil and down to Stratum B. Stratum B contains objects

between Strada A and C; and stratum C is that earth above the vigin soil and bedrock.

As the foundations of the wall were exposed a questin as to the relation of the fill to the foundation appeared. In the NW corner, the profile looks as if the wall foundation was dug into previous fill. However, in the NE corner the fill looks as it it was put in after the wall.
