Daily Log

June 17, 2005

We began the day with a light pick pass to finish removing locus 1 topsoil.  We then trimmed the baulk walls, swept, and photographed the trench.  I then declared locus 2 open.  The soil of locus 2 is a dark brown color and of a clay-like consistency.  The opening elevations for locus 2 were:

  • SW: 1.42 m./below datum    24.99 m. absolute
  • NW: 1.01 m./b.d.                 25.40 m. abs.
  • NE: 1.13 m./b.d.                  25.28 m. abs.
  • SE: 1.56 m./b.d.                  24.85 m. abs.
  • Center: 1.30 m./b.d.             25.11 m. abs.

We then commenced a first pick pass from west to east with pciks.  The soil contained many rocks and little terracotta or pottery.  As we proceeded it became clear that the loose rocks were of greater number along the northern baulk.  During this pass we recovered a small sherd of Medieval pottery with incisions and green coloring (Find 1) while sifting.  We next began a second pass across locus 2 using only trowels in the northern third of the trench.  The pass revealed more loose rock scatter along the northern

portion of the trench and a few larger stones extending out of the northern baulk wall near the northwest corner into the trench.  Next we made a third pass and succeeded in defining a larger extent of rock scatter and larger stones.  During this pass we recovered a terracotta rochetto fragment (Find 2).  Finally we cleaned the trench and took closing elevations.

  • SW: 1.49 m./below datum    24.92 m. absolute
  • NW: 1.12 m./b.d.                 25.29 m. abs.
  • NE: 1.25 m./b.d.                  25.16 m. abs.
  • SE: 1.60 m./b.d.                  24.81 m. abs.
  • Center: 1.36 m./b.d.             25.05 m. abs.
