Daily Log

June 20, 2005

Began the day by taking opening elevations:

  • SW: 1.49 m. below datum   24.92 m. absolute
  • NW: 1.13 m. b./d.               25.28 m. abs.
  • NE:  1.27 m. b./d.               25.14 m. abs.
  • SE:  1.61 m. b./d.               24.80 m. abs.
  • Center:  1.37 m. b./d.          25.04 m. abs.

We next began a pick pass through the dark brown clay soil.  During the pass we began to encounter a lighter brown soil with larger grain consistency.  We therefore decided to scrape and clean the trench.  During the cleaning we found a piece of incised, glazed Medieval pottery (Find 1).  After cleaning the rocks along the northern wall the decision was made to open a 2 m. by 2 m. extension to the northeast of the trench.  We therefore took closing elevations in the original 2 m. by 3 m. trench and closing photographs.

We next began work on the extension.  First we cleared the ground of a rock pile dump from an earlier season of excavation.  Next we lay the baulk line by triangulating from known points on the original trench.  We then began a light pick pass to remove the dark packed topsoil.  This is locus 3.  The goal of the extension is to come down on top of the retaining wall and define its path.
