Previous day's magnetometry readings indicated an anomaly immediately north of CA 41, so it was decided to extend the trench into meters N 7-8, W 4-5. It was a continuation of locus 2 since the soil did not change in its color and consistency. While the first 10 cm cut was being made in N 7, W 4-5, a 60 cm piece of modern iron wire was recovered from the top soil layer. Because the wire was undoubtedly the cause for unusual magnetrometric readings, the work in the north extension of CA 41 was suspended. 20 worn

tile fragments ( 1-5 cm) and 3 pieces of pottery, impasto, were recovered in N 7, W 4-5, as well as a small piece of chert.

The western portion of CA 41 locus 2, including N 1-6, W 6-8, was closed off.

Work also continued in the area immediately west of and in locus 1. Area of pre-existing baulk in N 2-4, W 2-3 (see plan on p. 2), designated as locus 3, wsa leveled using trowels to the elevation of CA 36 1991 extension. Soil was brownish yellow [ 2.5 Y, 5/3] with numerous black organic inclusions. A circle of strong brown [7.5 YR, 4/6]

soil, approximately 35 cm in diameter, was uncovered in N 3, W 2-3, 220 cm from south baulk and 210 cm from east baulk, at 18 cm b.d. Because it was found close to the surface and was less than 2 cm in thickness, it was concluded that this discoloration is due to a recent deposit of clay on the surface. Locus 3 was closed at depths:

P1 = 20 cm b.d.

P2 = 23 cm b.d.

P3 = 20 cm b.d.

P4 = 19 cm b.d.

5 tile fragments (1-4 cm) and 2 impasto sherds were recovered, all worn.

New locus 4 was designated in the area of southern two meters of CA 36 1991 extension (see plan on p. 2) and area beneath locus 3, N 2-5, W 2-4. Locus 4 is limited on the east by CA 36, 1991, including the partially uncovered stone formation; and on the west by bedrock. Started to trowel locus 4 to the elevation of CA 36, 1991. 23 fragments of tile (1-4 cm) and 9 pottery pieces, all impasto, were recovered. Also a small piece of bronze wsa found. Soil was similar to that of locus 3 in color and consistency.
