P.M.

Thelma Follett assisted again.

PVAed opposite side of bone C (see previous day's entry). Cleaned Box 4 bones with alcohol-water solution (50:50) and left them to try.

Began work on Box 5: 2 long bones (femurs).

Chris photographed the box first, then excavated them from the soil.

Note: Clay soil by seepage of bones - underneath is "galestra" soil (shale?) in "sheets" -- hard. E. Nielson suggested that the clay represents loose soil from

the burial and the harder soil underneath is the lining of the grave.

Set up an extra lamp. Now use 2 lamps while excavating bones from each.

Cleaning procedure suggested by E. Nielson: Brush bone with brush (small paintbrush) with alcohol-water solution and dab with cotton at the same time. This should remove dirt from the bone and make it whiter.

Measured the two bone shafts from this box (incomplete) in situ:

  • Bone A - 320 mm
  • Bone B - 295 mm

The distance between the bones was 160 mm.

The bones were then located on the grave plan and labelled Box 5 A and B.

Note:(1) Under Bone A, there was a small flat stone. (2) Pinkish red discoloration was found along the shaft (side closest to Bone B) of Bone A. This was true of Bone B, too.
