Locus Conclusion

The development of the loci was artificially complicated due to the presence of stumps and rocks dividing T28S into two sections. Also, changes in features (determining the extent of the tile spread) prompted arbitrary creations of loci. Looking past these to the conflatd loci into five soils, a pattern emerges. Locus one was topsoil resting at a dramatic slope (change in 30 cm depth three meters) and contained very worn pottery and terracotta. Locus two was similar in regard to material, but presented aless dramatic slope. Loci three and seven began to flatten out and the material less worn. Loci eight, nine, ten, twelve, thirteen and fourteen present excellently preserved material (e.g. stamped rochetto two p.89; covertile four p.89) and a white/grey soil with clay deposits. The white soil extends across the trench at an even less-sloped level and permeats the tile spread and part of the slingstone concentration. Beneath this soil is locus ten, locus eleven presents the beginning of galestra at its closing depth. Most likel, the soil in loci one and two is erosional, the soil in three and seven is transitional fron use phase to erosional, and the soil in loci eight, nine, ten, twelve, thirteen and fourteen is use phase. Locus elevenis probablt pre-galestra and supports the white soil.
