Slag Analysis

Many fragments of slag, 126 in total, weighing 1241 grams, were recovered from T-87 in the 2016 excavation season. Loci 3 and 6 , which are equivalent, contained the most slag, at 39 and 67 fragments respectively. No fragments were cataloged.

As with the small concentrations of burned bone and vitrified terra cotta, the presence of a great deal of slag may indicate intense burning in the area surrounding T-87, possibly associated with metal production. The pattern of slag recovery resembles that experienced in several of the Civitate A trenches excavated to the immediate west of T-87 in 2012 and 2013.
