Daily Log 7/22/11

22/7/11 AM A pick pass was completed in the western half of the trench. Soil in this topsoil/humus layer is very hard, crumbly and a medium brown color. Soil was sorted into buckets and dumped in the dirt dump *(dirt dump location). There are numerous small, loose rocks that appear to be separating the humus layer from Locus II . Terracotta and pottery were put into separate latte boxes. A second pick pass was completed in the eastern half of the trench. While picking the eastern half, the three stumps in the western half were defined.  Soil was sorted into buckets and dumped.  While sorting soil in the eastern half of the trench, a piece of modern iron was found near the eastern-most stump. While sorting terracotta from Locus I , a small piece of medieval pottery was found with traces of glaze. (SF #2) SPECIAL FIND #2 Locus 1 NW: 43W,96S/NE: 39W, 96S SE: 39W,98S/SW: 43W, 98S Between 30.14 & 30.03 mAE Medieval pottery with glaze In the remaining time before lunch, stumps were defined throughout the trench, baulk walls were trimmed, and roots were clipped to get ready for opening photos of Locus II . PM After lunch, opening elevations and photos were taken of Locus II. Locus 2 opening elevations: NW: 30.11 mAE NE : 30.00 mAE SE : 29.95 mAE SW: 30.03 mAE The soil in Locus II is 10 YR 3/2 very dark grayish brown. It is much darker than the humus layer

of Locus I and very clay-like in texture. There are numerous small rocks coming up throughout the first pick pass in Locus II , in the western half of the trench. Soil was sorted into bucket and dumped. Terracotta and pottery were put into separate latte boxes. A second pick pass was done in the eastern half of the trench. While picking, stumps in the western half of the trench were defined. Soil was sorted into buckets and dumped. Terracotta and pottery were sorted into separate latte boxes. Soil color and texture remains the same in both the eastern and western halves, indicating that Locus II is present throughout the entirety of the trench.
