STRATEGY: 1938 continue to carefully remove remaining dirt in death pit (approx 2m diagonal left). More skulls are expected, as well as long bones and large skull sized stones. As the bones are exposed they will be numbered, planned & photographed. Clean off excavated area as well as adjacent area to East (excavated Death Pit area last year) for a morning photo.

SUMMARY: 1938 5 zambils of soil collected. After almost all the ash 1938 was removed, the bottom of death pit was reached, matching the level reached the year before. All of this area was cleaned out for a photo. Two more skulls were found, as well as several more long bones, a top of a skull. The pottery sherds were quite large several seem to be placed in such a way that they might resemble skulls, they are also a kind of pinky hue that resembles skull colour. The bones were reviewed in situ by the human remains specialist, Jessica who identified the top of skull in western slope. She also determined that the pelvis & legs were not articulated. Large, skull sized ( & shaped) stones are mixed with the bones and pottery. Some are placed on top of bones. The stones, bones & pottery were planned and the bones will be numbered and removed tomorrow.
