Locus 3

AM

Work begins with baulk walling and clipping roots in order that stratigraphy is clear. The soil in the Northwest corner is scraped back to see the nature and extent of the soil change. The soil in the Northwest corner is distinct from that of the rest of Locus 3 , which is a dark medium brown with many stone, terracotta, and pottery, and is instead a soft, claylike dark olive brown with flaky vegetation inclusions very small in size. This soil has no material inclusions so far. Work continues in Locus 3 by tracing the soil color change in the Northwest corner with trowels and dumped into a wheelbarrow.

While baulk walling, a fragment of slag (Special find #1) was found.

Special Find #1 :

- Baulk trim

- 55.77E/74S

- 23.62-23.83mAE

The stone feature in the central of the Northernmost meters of Locus 3 is being defined by trowels in order to explore the extent of the stones. Materials are limited to terracotta and pottery, but no bone.

While peeling back the Northwest corner, the dark olive brown claylike soils seems to be intermixing with a finer and more claylike Locus 3 soil. No artifacts have been recovered from here so far.

Work now concentrates on leveling the trench floor based on the scraping that was

conducted earlier this morning. To this end, a light pick pass was conducted in the Western half of the trench and the Northeastern part of the trench. Soil is hand-sorted into buckets and dumped into a wheelbarrow. While sorting soil, a fragment of vitrified terracotta (Special find #2) was revealed.

Special Find #2 :

- Locus 3

- 55.24E/73.56S

- 23.86mAE

The soil throughout the trench was leveled, and baulk walls were trimmed. Due to the compactness and concentration of rocks in the central-northern extent of the trench.
