Locus 3

AM

Work begins with a pick pass in the eastern meters of the trench. Soil is hand-sorted into buckets and dumped into a wheelbarrow. Soil is a dark medium brown with many stony inclusions and some roots. As a pick pass moves through the central third of the trench, a conglomeration of stones is being revealed in the central-northern portion of Locus 3 , following the exposure of one large stone in the area yesterday at the end of the day and which was left in situ.

In Locus 3 , no cleanly cut tree branches have been found, unlike in the previous loci. Terracotta has been recovered consistently through the pick passes in Locus 3 so far, averaging in size from 2 to 5 cm. Pottery is recovered in small quantities in this pick pass so

far. No bone has been found.

Pick passes were made twice in the western section of the trench in order to bring it level with the eastern and central portions of the trench. Soil is hand-sorted into buckets and dumped into a wheelbarrow. At the same time, the stone accumulation in the north-central meter of the trench is defined to clarify the nature of their relationship to one another and to the rest of Locus 3 . Soil is consistent dark medium brown granular soil with many stony inclusions, pottery, and terracotta. No bone has thus far been found. There are some roots.

The stone accumulation is being defined further. Hand picks and trowels are used to level the area surrounding the stones. The

baulk walls are being trimmed in order that stratigraphy remain as clear as possible. Soil from this work is hand-sorted into buckets and dumped into a wheelbarrow.

PM

A pick pass was conducted in the Eastern section of the trench. Soil continues to be sorted by hand into buckets, then wheel-barrowed over to the dirt dump to the Southwest of the trench. Notably, some plaster has been recovered in the central extent of the trench, and in the Southwestern corner, carbonized wood was recovered. Soil color and fabric remains consistent throughout locus 3 , except for the Northwest corner, where the soil was darker, (medium dark brown), with no inclusions, and loose, with a hole accompanying the different soil in the corner. While sorting, a fragment of bronze was recovered, (Special find #1)

The rock feature in the central extent of the trench continues to be defined, and the surrounding soil lowered, to be better understand its relationship to the rest of the locus.

A pick pass was conducted in the Western extent of the trench. Soil continues to be sorted by hand into buckets, and wheel-barrowed to the dirt dump to the Southwest.

The floor of the trench was levelled, and the baulk walls were trimmed. While trimming, a fragment of burnt bone was recovered, (Special find #2).
