The baulk wall in the original T22 west extension trench were trimmed today so that the stratigraphy of the trench could be seen more clearly. This was needed because erosion and weathering had eaten away at the walls. Before work could begin in the new section of T22 west extension (meters 50s167E to 52s164E), a large rock pile had to be moved. The rocks were transported several meters to the south-east of the trench. Once the rock pile was removed, a datum point was established along the 164E line on a tree stump. It was set cut the same elevation as the datum point for trench T21 (see book SJGII). Opening depths were taken for Locus 1 which is characteristically dark to medium brown soil with organic material.

Locus 1 opening depths

(datum pints is approx 15 cm above soil level along the 164 E line of the trench on a stump)

50S 167 E     16.1 cm bd

52S 167 E     23.6 cm bd

52S 164 E     24.0 cm bd

50S 164E      17.3 cm bd

50.88S 166.35E     17.0 cm bd

51S 167E     16.2 cm bd

51S 164E     16.9 cm bd

The first cut was made in meter 50S 167E. *

This area was levelled before the break.

PM

Cuts continued to be made through meters 51S 167E, 50S 166E, and 51S 166E. By the end of the work day, this area had area had been taken down to 27 cm bd. About 1/8 cassetta of terracotta was found and 10 fragments of pottery.
