A.M.

Meters H-I/42-43 were scraped down at a level of about 90 cm in order to define the extent of the reddish burn soil with inclusions of carbon and plaster.  It was decided after this to cut into the shelf in G/42 as this soil seems to extend into it.  Several fragments of bronze were discovered including (find #2) a flat piece with a ridge on its exterior edge.  1/4 a latte box of bone and pottery -- mainly impasto, and 1/16 a casetta of tile.  Several large pieces of carbon were also found.  The full extent of the reddish burn soil will be noted when the cut in meter G is complete.

A cut in H-I/48 was begun, moving to the west, at a depth of about 100-105 cm.  The soil was medium olive brown.  1/4 latte of pottery and about 20-30 small fragments of tile and plaster were found.  As the cut was extended west the stone concentration in H-I/48-47 was removed.  Several large pieces of carbon were discovered.  1/2 latte box of pottery and bone and about 20 pieces of tile were removed from the area of the concentration.  This included a fragment of terracotta with an unusual surface (find #1).

After the stones were removed and the cut continued more stones were discovered beneath the surface.  Work was then started defining and leaving these in place.

P.M.

Continued cut in meters H-I/47-48 to an approx. depth of 100-105 cm.  Removed stones and began picking, but then had to work with trowels when more stones were found beneath the first layer.  Soil is medium-brown/olive with some large pieces of charcoal, approx. 1/16 a cassetta of tile, and 1/4 latte box of orangeware, a few pieces of bucchero, and some impasto.  Among the bucchero was find #4, an incised piece found in H/47.

Continued lowering meter G/42 down to approx. 90 cm, and extended cut into G/43.  Soil is medium-brown/olive with charcoal and plaster inclusions, but at about 85-90 cm the reddish burn layer is just begginning to show through.  Recovered only a few small pieces of tile and less than 10 pieces of pottery and bone.  In these meters were find #3, a large amorphous piece of bronze, and find #5, an unusual rim fragment of orangeware.
