Photos of winged horse in situ

17 July 1968

Twenty-one boxes of tile were dumped today.  Seventy-eight pieces were marked.  Forty-five frieze frags. excavated, eight were campstool frags.  Also odd pieces and many lateral sima frags, cavettos and corners.  In the morning a large (70 cm wide, 30 high) bearded male head with well-executed plastic curls and locks and a badly scarred face was excavated in grid L8 (C).  The late morning revealed a winged horse 50 cm long, missing the neck and head and feet.  It is a phenomenal piece, most likely part of architectural decoration.  Grid L11 (C).  From grid L on to the end of the trench the stone seal is mixed with stratum "C" and the finds.  This layer is rising to within 50 cm of the surface and then running into the bedrock.
