Daily Log 15/7/15

15/7/15

AM

Work began this morning with a pick pass in the central third of the trench. The soil continued to be light brown and granular. Loose soil was sorted and dumped. A few pieces of pottery were recovered. Another pick pass was done across the southern third of the trench, further exposing the rocks in the Southwestern corner. Soil was sorted and dumped. The soil appears to be more clay-like with a few patches of slightly compacted soil around the roots in the area. A few pieces of tile and pottery were found. The baulk walls were then taken down to be level with the floor of the trench using hand picks and trowels. The soil was sorted and dumped. Some worn tile and pottery was found. A very light pick pass was done in the Northern third of the trench, revealing flakey, galestra-like soil, so it was then decided to proceed with trowels. A piece of bone with a potential butcher mark was found lying on top of this soil (SF#1).

Trowels were used to scrape the floor of the trench to expose the new flakey soil, beginning on the Northern edge of the trench moving South. Rocks along the Eastern baulk wall between T-80 and T-74 were defined.

Work continued using hand picks and trowels to reveal the flaking soil throughout the course of the trench; continuing from North to South. Beyond the flaking soil in the Northwest corner of the trench, soil in Locus 2 continues to be light brown and granular, with mild deposits of pottery, bone, and tile. Soil continues to be sorted by hand into buckets, and then dumped into wheelbarrows. While excavating, a spindle whorl (Special Find #2) was found:

Work continued through the afternoon using hand picks and trowels. While excavating , a cluster of rocks was found in the Southwestern corner of the trench, connecting to bedrock in T-58 to the West. Additionally, more flaking soil has appeared in the central meter of the trench. Soil in the Southern meter of the trench remains granular, but the Southern meter remains about 5cm higher than the central and Northern meters of the trench. Sorting has continued as before, with soil being sorted by hand into buckets and dumped into wheelbarrows. Notably, pottery and terracotta have started to be found as smaller pieces and shards.
